- Context
Cities in Indonesia face a high number of youth fatalities and traffic risks due to road safety problems. In 2023, more than half of traffic crashes involved children and young people aged 0 and 39 (Menteri Perencanaan Pembangunan Nasional/Kepala Badan Perencanaan Pembangunan Nasional, 2024).
The situation is getting worse as Indonesia’s current road safety policies do not place importance on road safety for children and youth. Indonesia’s transport policies give priority to motorized vehicles over vulnerable users, including children and youth. Based on the situation, there is an urgency to improve road safety so children and youth can access the street safely.
Transportologi has been advocating for road safety since 2017. In 2021 and 2022, Transportologi has advocated for the improvement of road safety in SMPN 1 Surakarta, which is impacted by the new construction of the Manahan flyover. This project has resulted in interim road safety improvements in the area around the school.
This year, Transportologi, with the support of the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP), plans to scale up the project to the city level and to reach more schools that are prone to road safety risks under the project of AI&Me Empowering Youth for Liveable Cities. This project can serve as the bridge to empower the youth to participate and drive changes in road safety in Indonesia. To support the implementation of this project, interns will be needed.
